Ontario and federal income tax estimate

Federal plus Ontario tax, with surtax and health premium included.

2026 rates · checked 18 September 2026

A starting point, not tax advice. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

What this does not cover. An estimate from published rates using only the basic personal amount. It does not include the CPP or EI credits, the Canada employment amount, dividend or capital gains treatment, or any other credit you may be entitled to — so real tax is usually lower than this figure.

How this works

What the number means

Canada taxes income in brackets: each slice of income is taxed at its own rate, not the whole amount at your top rate. Federal and Ontario brackets are applied separately, then the basic personal amount reduces each as a credit.

Ontario adds two things most calculators forget. A surtax of 20% on Ontario tax above $5,818 and a further 36% above $7,446 — a tax on the tax. Then the Ontario Health Premium, up to $900, which is charged on income rather than on tax.

Your marginal rate is what the next dollar costs. Your average rate is what the whole income costs. They are very different numbers and it is the average one that tells you what you actually pay.

Worked example. On $85,000 of taxable income the estimate covers federal tax, Ontario tax, the Ontario surtax and the health premium, and reports both the total and your average rate.

Questions

When is my personal return due?

April 30 for most people. If you or your spouse are self-employed you have until June 15 to file, but anything you owe is still due April 30.
